    James William Fulbright was born in 1905 in Summer, Missouri. Fulbright was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1942, where he composed the Fulbright-Connally Resolution that supported an organization that went on to become the United Nations. Fulbright was then elected to the U.S. Senate in 1944. In the Senate, he served as the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 1959 to 1975, supported the Truman Doctrine, Marshall Plan, and NATO, and created the Fulbright Exchange Program. He lost his seat to Arkansas governor Dale Bumpers in 1974. The UA College of Arts and Sciences was named for Fulbright in 1981. In 1993, President Bill Clinton awarded Fulbright the Medal of Freedom. Fulbright died on February 9, 1995 following a massive stroke.
