    "July 8, 1985

    Dear Friends:
Enclosed is an invitation to our upcoming Birthday Party Fundraiser. We hope that you will be able to join us for this celebration of Senator Bumpers' birthday (actually August 12 and he will have to tell you which one) and at the same time help raise funds to conduct the 1986 re-election campaign.
We realize that many of you from outside the central Arkansas area may not be able to make such a long trip, but we wanted you to know about the party anyway. We hope you will be able to come and ask that you let our other friends in your area who might be interested to know about it. If you would like tickets, either for yourself or to sell to others, please contact us as soon as possible. Even if you can't make it to the party, your contribution will be appreciated.
We want to turn out a really big crowd for this event to demonstrate the strength of Senator Bumpers' support from all across the state so please try to help us sell tickets and join us yourself. We promise a fun afternoon for everyone.
Thank you for your steadfast support of the senator. Next year's campaign is probably going to be both difficult and expensive so we are getting ready now for whatever the future brings. Your early and continued involvement is crucial.
Our campaign office will continue to operate from now through next year's elections so call if you have questions or suggestions.
    Sincerely,
    Archie Schaffer III
P.S. Anyone who has already contributed the maximum ($1000) cannot purchase tickets but other members of their family could do so."

Dale Leon Bumpers was born on August 12, 1925 in Charleston, Arkansas. He married longtime girlfriend Betty Lou Flanagan on September 4, 1949. After serving as governor for four years, Bumpers ran for the U.S. Senate in 1975 and won, defeating longtime Senator J. William Fulbright. Bumpers served as a U.S. Senator for twenty-four years during which highly supported environmental legislation, expansion of funds and land to the National Park System, and efforts to reduce national debt. Bumpers efforts in environmental legislation and the preservation of parklands and wetlands awarded him the Ansel Adams Award from the Wilderness Society in 1998. He died on January 1, 2016.
