    DescriptionSmall orange paper booklet belonging to Mary Burt Brooks. Handwritten inside one cover: "L.V. Nesmith (?), 136 School St., Lowell. Map." Recipes follow in similar handwriting for: "gum arabic starch; to perfume clothes; for the hair; for the skin; Mrs. Black's receipt for the hair (dated June 28, 1870, Lowell); for the hair; wash for the skin; for the teeth; receipts for dying green; Dying blue; Ma's Receipt for Dying Green; Scarlet Dye; To make Hair grow; Curl; Soap."
    The booklet is meant to function as two separate documents. The booklet must be turned upside down and begins inside the other cover. Handwritten inside the other cover: "Mrs. George Ford Pembroke." A one cent stamp is also inside this cover. The "second" part of the booklet contains various proverbs and bible verses written in what appears to be the same handwriting as Mrs. Pembroke's signature.
