    DescriptionDaguerreotype of an Arkansas soldier, Lt. Benjamin Ross, from the Mexican War. Ross served in the Arkansas Mounted Cavalry. The daguerreotype is mounted in an embossed paper case decorated with flower motifs. There are two latches on one side of the case. The other side of the case was held together by the paper cover, but it is torn. The inside of the case is lined in red velvet. The daguerreotype is set in a gold oval frame. The image is a man in uniform, with his arms crossed.

    The daguerreotype is a photograph that uses a polished, silver plated sheet of metal for the image. The image can best be seen when held at an angle. It was the first photograph to be commercially successful. The images are fragile and can be easily rubbed off. This photographic process was developed by Louis Deguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce.
