Elias Conway was born on May 17, 1812 in Greeneville, Tennessee. He was elected governor in 1852. While he was governor, five railroad companies were chartered. Conway’s created a new court of chancery in Pulaski County to place the Real Estate and State Banks in receivership to help stabilize the economy. He also created the state’s first geological survey, reformed swampland reclamation, promoted the state’s assumption of the School of the Blind, improved the prison, and created a stable, prosperable state economy while serving as governor. He left office in 1860, and died on February 28, 1892.
