The banner that runs across the top of the insignia reads "E Pluribus Unum." The chest of the eagle is a crest of vertical stripes. The spring steel band around the inside of the crown has been removed. This effect, or perhaps affectation, was unofficially allowed for persons having survived 50 combats missions.
