DescriptionA Surveyor Compass made of brass, wood, and glass. The silvered dial is engraved with compass markings and a maker's name: "W & L.E. Gurley, Troy, NY". Two leveling bubbles are installed at the top of the dial outside of the rim. The clamp, tangent screw, and Vernier readout gauge is located at the bottom of the dial outside of the rim. Also included in the compass case are a Jacob's staff attachment and a small brass lever. The case appears to have had handles on the ends at one time, but are now gone. The compass was used by Robert Sanders Burke in early Arkansas surveys from 1848-1890
