Dear Sister
It is with a great deal of pleasure that I write you a few lines. I have nothing interest to write you. My health has bin [sic] very bad but it is improving. I can't walk much. I can go anywhere threw [sic] Camp that I please. I doing [sic] as well as you could expect under the sircumstance [sic].
Emily, it was about like taking my life to learn all my folks there among the enemy. I was sure I would hear of Thomas bein [sic] kild [sic]. I herd [sic] that you had gone North. I never herd [sic] from (?) till the 11 of this month. I received(?) a letter from Margaret that relieved me very much. I glad [sic] to hear that you was all well and still had something to eat. I was almost sure that you all would starve. I was very sorry to hear of your loosing [sic] all of your horses. I won't want to dishearten you but the worst hasn't come yet. Old Abe has called for 25,000 more troops. Old Stonewall whiped [sic] them badly in Virginia. He lost his left arm. One General kild [sic], several wounded. The troops have all left here but our brigade. One brigade went down on Red River. It is only (?) work with me but I think they are fixing to give this place up to so they are moving all the guns and every thing to Camden (?) (?) River and I think all that will go. (?) be taken south. The Army here is in the best of health and in fine spirits. They (?) (?) about (?) and the girls. Women are plenty here, of the sort.
Emily I think you all have done me very bad. I want to hear from you so bad. I was most (?). I hope you will write to me every change. Thomas new [sic] when Blevins came down and he (?) wrote a word to me yet now. I hope you and the colonel will do better. I don't now [sic] when I will (?). I am overwhelm in a cloud of darkness. I want you to write to me as soon as you get this. Give me all the particulars from that country. I won't now [sic] if you think you can (?) the (?). Nothing more but remain your affectionate brother
