DescriptionThe dress is a reproduction of the original two-piece gown in black synthetic taffeta, with shirred lace and original trim of bead and braid. Mrs. Margaret Jones would have worn a dress similar to this one on January 18, 1897, during the inauguration of her husband, Mr. Daniel W Jones, as the nineteenth Governor of Arkansas.

This dress is a three-piece set of heavy black silk taffeta that has a fitted bodice with a dickey and a lowered waistline. The dickey is made of shirred Chantilly Lace, topped with a band collar of taffeta that is trimmed with lace and beading. The lowered waistline seam and the sleeve cuffs are trimmed with beading. The wrist length set-in sleeves are leg-o-mutton and are fully puffed at the top, tapering slightly to fit at the wrist. The floor length gored skirt with the fitted bodice give an hour-glass silhouette which was popular at the turn of the twentieth century.

Margaret Parkin Hadley Jones was born on February 11, 1846. She married Daniel Webster Jones on February 9, 1864. They had two daughters and three sons. Margaret served as the nineteenth First Lady of Arkansas from 1897 to 1901. She died on February 10, 1914.
