DescriptionDress uniform for an American Infantry Colonel worn during the U.S.-Mexican War. Note the epaulettes on the shoulders, the buttons stamped with "I" for Infantry, and the red silk sash worn only by officers. Although the Army specified the components of an officer's uniform (like pewter buttons or silver piping), each officer was responsible for having his own uniform made. Often, the men added personal touches. While most images from this era show American soldiers fighting in dress uniforms like the one featured here, in reality the soldiers wore a simpler or more practical uniform for combat.
