James Clarence Wakeley, better known as Jimmy Wakely (he dropped the second "e" as a teenager), was born on February 16, 1914, in Mineola, Howard County, Arkansas. He was a country western singer and actor from the 1930s through the 1950s. Wakely appeared in radio, movies, and television. Wakely released 15 studio albums, which included his two most popular country singles, "One Has My Name (The Other Has My Heart)" and "I Love You So Much It Hurts," both in 1948. From 1949 to 1952, he appeared in a series of comic books published by DC Comics as "Hollywood's Sensational Cowboy Star." He appeared in over 65 films and TV episodes. Wakely died on September 23, 1982 in California.
Published by DC Comics for May-June. The cover is yellow with red, black, blue, and green print. "Hollywood's Sensational Cowboy Star!" is printed in small green font across the top. Below that, in large red cursive print, reads "Jimmy Wakely" on a bright yellow background. On the front, Wakely is fighting with a group of Native Americans who are holding weapons. Wakely is struggling to get away, his clothes having been ripped in places. A blue-clad leg dominates the left foreground of the cover. On the back cover is an advertisement for Thom McAn shoes. A shoe is displayed and crowds of people are surrounding it in dismay of its quality and style. The comic book has an advertised price of ten cents and contains 52 pages.
