DescriptionA surgical carpet bag used by M.L. Gerould during the Civil War. The carpet bag has a fabric handle 18 3/4" long, the bag is made of beige, gold, and orange fabric with a rose design. The bag opening and flap are trimmed in dark leather. The bag is lined with beige, gold, and red cotton fabric. The inside flap has stenciled text stating: "Surg. M.L. Gerould/U.S.N." A small sticker that is partially missing is attached near the top of the flap states: "Manu/Robe/No. 9I/B...". The lock part of the clasp remains on the front of the bag, but the other part of the lock is missing.

Gerould was born in 1841 in New Hampshire and graduated from Harvard Medical College in 1866. He served as acting medical cadet in United States Army in 1863 and acting assistant surgeon in United States Navy from 1863 to 1865. Gerould married Helen Bartlett of New York in 1889 and they had no children. Gerould died at the age of 63 in Missouri.
