    DescriptionA letter written in October of 1918 in Meuse-Argonne, France by Arkansas native Paul Remmel to his aunt and uncle in Little Rock, Arkansas. Remmel served in the U.S. Army as 1st Lieutenant during WWI. This letter was written in Remmel's field notebook while he was under distress from continuous German artillery fire on the front lines.

    Paul Remmel served as a 1st Lieutenant in Company G, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division as part of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF), U.S. Army. He was one of two officers, himself and his captain, of the 1st Division at the Battle of the Argonne Forest in Northeastern France in October of 1918. Their actions were acknowledged in "Germany Tribute to the First Division" letter (2017.024.04).
