DescriptionA booklet titled "Brief Baptist History" belonging to James P. Eagle, 16th Governor of Arkansas. The booklet has a green cover with a drawing of the holy bible in the center. It was written by S.H. Ford. The booklet also features Eagle's signature with a small handwritten note underneath it. It is dated June 8, 1888.

James Philip Eagle was born August 10, 1837 in Marion County, Tennessee. His family relocated to what is now Lonoke County in 1857 and on January 3, 1882 he married Mary Kavanaugh Oldham Eagle. He served as governor from 1889-1893, a time of great political division among the Democratic Party in Arkansas. As a devout Baptist minister, Eagle was elected president of the Arkansas State Baptist Convention for twenty-four consecutive years. He passed away December 20, 1904 and is buried in Mount Holly Cemetery.
