DescriptionA black and white photograph of the Strand Theater on Ouachita Avenue in Hot Springs, Arkansas from 1954. Showing at the theater are the films "3 Ring Circus," starring Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, and "Tanganyika," starring Van Heflin. The theater is having a promotional event to bring customers to see the film "3 Ring Circus." A placard in front of the theater is advertising for the event: "Look Kids / Big Surprise / Party / New Games, Prizes, & Quizzes / Refreshments / Every Saturday. Fun for All." There is a large crowd, including many children and two clowns, standing in front of the theater and looking toward the camera. On the right side of the photo, behind the initial line of children, is what appears to be a miniature merry-go-round.The Strand Theater in Hot Springs changed names and ownership many times--it was believed to be under the Commonwealth chain of theaters when it closed in the mid 1970s. The theater was nearly destroyed by fire in 1934. However, it was renovated and reopened. The theater is no longer open.
